Well, I've been using a bank of 1meg x3 and a bank of 1meg x9 in my
386dx 25 for almost a year now with no problems. Running DOS 5.0 with
qemm 6.0, DeskviewX, and when I absolutely have to, Windows 3.1 (Was
3.0). My bios (AMI) is dated, I think, Aug 1990. My question now is,
can I use 4meg simms with that bios, or do I have to upgrade? Anybody
got a phone # for AMI or a BBS? Maybe they're on the net! You out

Subject: Conflict between tape drive/CD-ROM player
I have recently installed a Mitsumi (yes the slow 680msec model)
CD-ROM player on my system. It was configured as IRQ 5 (3 is my mouse)
and default I/O address of 300h. My SYSGEN Qic-File tape drive
(vintage 1985 or so) suddenly failed giving either RAM parity errors in
segment 0000 or Direct COntroller errors.
I had moved several cards around while installing the Mitsumi and I
was not sure if I had accidentally damaged the interface card for the
tape drive, so I removed the Mitsumi interface card and, amazingly, the
tape drive worked fine. Reconfigured Mitsumi for address 310h, but
tape drive is still DOA. CD-ROM player has always worked fine.
Anyone have a clue as to where the conflict is and how to get around
it?

it myself.
C and/or Assembler code would be nice.

Subject: Help: whole command line in C.
I don't know whether there is a better place to ask, but there surely
must be people on IBMPC-L capable of answering my question concerning
C.
Instead of using argc and argv to obtain program arguments in C I want
to obtain the whole literal command line as it was specified when
calling the program (eventually without the program name itself, like
the QuickBasic COMMAND$ function). The reason for this is that I want
to interpret the command line in my own way (delimiters like spaces and
commas may be significant), without the need for (single or double)
quotes.
Any solution, preferably for general C, for DOS and other OSs (Unix)
will be appreciated.

Dear netters,
I have here several programs in MS-Pascal on PC's (elderly..) that I
would like to convert to Borland Pascal version 7 (daring, isn't it?).
Another alternative could be to use the libraries from inside *anything
newer* than MS-Pascal such as Borland or MS C++.
The idea occured when I read that Borland Pascal supports (since
version 7) things like 'const'-parameters and 'super arrays', that used
to be specific to MS-Pascal. Any hints, or should I better try myself

Subject: Must CPU and FPU clock speeds match?
I recently made a posting to this group about a problem I was
experiencing with system hangs while doing floating point calculations
with Fractint 17.2. Since then, I have contacted IIT (my FPU is an IIT
3C87SX-33) and Packard Bell (my machine is a Legend 316SX (386SX-25)).
IIT has obtained a copy of Fractint, and is going to try to recreate
the problem. Packard Bell informed me--to my surprise--that the rated
speeds of the 386SX and the 387SX needed to match. That is, since my
processor is an Intel 80386SX-25, I needed to use a 80387SX-25 or
equivalent. Thus, a 387SX-33 would not be suitable for my system. Is
this true?
I had thought up until now that the FPU was driven at the same clock
speed as the CPU, and, therefore, the rated speed of the FPU had to
match *or exceed* the clock speed of the CPU. Am I wrong? Is the guy
at Packard Bell right? Another alternative: could he be right *for
their machines* but not necessarily for other machines? The dealer
that ordered the IIT FPU for me is busily ordering an alternative chip;
if we're not snowed in it may arrive tomorrow. Perhaps I'm in need of
an education here. If so, please educate away. Please be gentle,
though--I'm a software person!
Thanks!

Subject: Newbie wants advice on C-Programming
I would just like to share a thought woth the other readers of
Info-IBMPC: we have as yet almost no mature (i.e. practised) _native_
C++ programmers, i.e. those for whom C++ is the first language. When
such do exist in plenty a new dimension will be added to the discussion
of the best route to C++. I would have said at this point that it is
better to go straight into C++ from wherever you are. You'll only have
to do a whole heap of unlearning if you go through an intermediate
language (even C). However, I think most C++ books (even Bjarne
Stroustrup's (spelling? sorry) ) require some knowledge that a newcomer
may not have. Are there any 'Start with C++' books out there ? OK, I
know that the originator of this thread does know at least FORTRAN.
I now use C for simulation & scientific programming, where I
previouly used FORTRAN. I've never found as good a FORTRAN debugger as
Borland's C(++) debugger. I miss COMPLEX, but I never have to write DO
100 I=.......100 CONTINUE. Swings and roundabouts.

Subject: OS/2 is Great!
Hello all,
It has been rather interesting to read through the digest for the past
few weeks. I am reminded of the early 80's when MS/PC DOS first made
its attack on CP/M. All the interesting comments and talk around OS/2
is one of the more interesting periods in recent times. Yeah, a new
operating system to challenge the "old standard".
Well, I bit too. A few months back I got OS/2 and after several
attempts finally got something going that I am really beginning to
enjoy! My last big hurdle was just cleared by replacing the OS2LDR file
so that the 40 Megs of RAM I have in my 483/33 is showing up when I run
memstat. Matter of fact, with just the editor running along with it, I
am showing 31 Megs available memory.
Nice feeling, now the extra programs I have been trying to squeeze into
operation at the same time should have no problem at all. It is kinda
nice to have PCPlus, Word Star and a couple of other old DOS standards
that I can continue to use until those 32 bit "killer apps" come along.
I do have to agree with some of the comments I've read though - it
would be nice to have a detailed description in the books about the
config.sys file. It seems IBM has kind of written their docs for the
folks that just "use" a computer, not the experimenter. They should
remember it was that experimenter that helped make DOS and the PC
pretty much the standard that it was and is today.

This means that the connection between decwrl.dec.com and the host
which you tried to access, timed out. You can do nothing about that.
Just try again.
> I am not clear as to what should be in the subject line
ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com does not use the subject line. I normally use
the subject line to make it meaningful for *me*, i.e. "Subject:
Download file.ext from host host.sub.domain".
> Also, how is a dir command used - DIR PD1:<directory> or DIR directory?
I do not know the answer to this one, but since you mention "PD1:"
notation, I assume you want to download from SIMTEL. For SIMTEL there
are dedicated e-mail servers and you do not have to use
ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com (some people even think that you should not
burden ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com with SIMTEL traffic). If you have access
to UseNet News, then see the newsgroups comp.archives.msdos.* on how to
access SIMTEL via e-mail.

There are a number of utilities that catch printer port output and send
it to a disk file. Some of them also can catch serial port output.
SIMTEL20 and maybe other systems offer some nice ones like

We have a true blue IBM AT in the lab that we used to control lab
instruments. Our group bought the computer when it first came out circa
1985. We recently bought a slightly more powerful computer to take its
place (486 at 66MHz).
Recently, we opened up the AT and looked inside for the first time in
years, and I need some help in identifying some boards and what they
do.
1. AST Advantage I think this is some kind of video board,
Hercules graphics.
2. Everex EV-640 I have no idea what this is.
Calls to the manufacturers did not help much, most of this stuff are no
longer being made. I have no documentation on these either. If anyone
has experience with any of these vintage boards or know what they do,
please email.
Also, what kind of hard disk/controller des the true blue AT used
(ide,MFM scsi or any other types am not aware of)? As far as I can
tell, the hard disk and the controller are original equipments.)
If I want to upgrade the hard disk, can I just buy the hard disk and
use the original controller?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: VGA mode detection
I am having trouble getting my VGA card to exhibit color after a cold
boot so that DOS programs (e.g. Zookeeper) come up black/white until I
1) enter and exit Windows whose color is always fine or 2)reboot (warm)
and then start the DOS application program. This is something to do
with the monitor.com that I am using in DOS and my card supplier
(Sigma, Legend II).
They sent me new ROMS and new drivers which do not recognize so ancient
of a monitor as my 960 x 580 Magnavox Professional(56 60 HZ manually
adjusted). The older drivers that came from them do work for my
monitor but in the fashion I have described above. So I really need a
new 640 x480 x 256 VGA driver compatible with the new ROMS.
Perhaps there is a simple solution to this that someone can suggest.
In trying to analyze this problem I think I might be able to use
programs similar to AVMODE.C and GVMODE.C which were written by Richard
Wilton and discussed in BYTE V. 13 No. 11 p 187 and can be had from
BIX. Does anyone have or know of similar programs?

any information regarding the DIP switch settings on the back and their

Also, the voice is a monotonous drone. It is not a limitation

Basically, all I have is the synthesizer and NO info.. so any

Subject: weird behaviour of 80486
Hello fellow networkers,
Daniel Dennet seems to have made a statement that ' eventualy we will
be able to produce a computer capable of emotions. Well, we will have
to survive all environmental problems to see this come true. Meanwhile
I'm confronted with a computer driving me into an exited state of
emotions.
So here is the story: I' have got a 80486 DX computer, 33 Mhz, 4 Mb
RAM; 100 Mb HD (Connor ESDI) 3.5 and 5.25 HD floppy drives.
When I installed Windows 3.1 I had problems with the extended memory
manager which came with DOS 5.0. So I changed to QEMM 6.0 (which is
happily running on a similar system I have at the deptmnt)
System up, and functioning, with no problems whatsoever. No increase in
system application errors, 800 * 600 OAK windows drivers available,
WP4Win smoothly functioning.
Some weeks ago, I had to do some simple DOS exercises, so I left
Windows; (ALT-F4 -ok)
ONLY to find that I could not access my A and B floppies any longer.
On asking DIR's the screen produces eithers a message stating empty
disks, or produces characters over ASCII 128 and not real filesizes.
After copying files from HD to these floppies the new files appear
normally after doing a DIR. However: these floppies can no longer be
read by other MSDOS computers!
Now for the ashtonishing part: While working in Windows there are no
problems! I can read, write and copy files from A to D; from D to B and
all combinations. Disks can be exchanged from my private computer to my
machine at work without a problem.
The only one extra curious thing about this computer shows on the
bootup screen.
The screen claimes that a Weitek coprocessor is avalailable, of which I
am sure that it is not. Changing the setup through the ROM setup
program does not change this message. Whether I enable or disable the
Weitek coprocessor is not changing the setup screen after writing to
CMOS and exiting the program.
I did remove QEMM 6.0 and returned to my previous DOS boot, only to
find that drives still were not available and performed as I described
above.
Checking with last version of MacAfee's SCAN reported 'no viruses
found' so I doubt it to be a result of an infection. Further, I
exchange short executables with between both my computers and the
phenomenon has not appeared on the other computer.
One of my collegues suggested a memory problem. But then again, why
will the problem not appear while working under Windows.
Who has an idea what is happening?
I would like not to have to return this machine for a checkup, it would
cost about 3 weeks, and I have both machines working for 5 -7 hours a
day.
